Two people were killed by a tornado in Louisiana; another died of a heart attack; and at least 8 were injured. Eight tornadoes were reported in east Texas and Louisiana. There was flooding in Houston and parts of Louisiana as thunderstorms dumped more rain on already saturated ground. After 10 straight days of rain Houston, the latest storm produced flooding before the weather broke yesterday morning. Some Houston-area neighborhoods had to be evacuated by boat. In Beaumont, Theresa Charles, 43, drowned when she drove her 1990 Oldsmobile into a flooded underpass.
Near Chataignier, Louisiana, Susan Robichaux, 34, of Houma, and Melissa Myers, a 16-year-old Chataignier High School sophomore, were killed when a tornado destroyed a mobile home at 629 Mount Carmel Road, about 2.5 miles southeast of Chataignier. The tornado threw the mobile home about 300 feet. Also injured were Damon Webre, 38, Mary Myers, 42, and two children. In Beauregard Parish, Reid Simmons, 69, died of an apparent heart attack after he and his wife were helped out of a trailer that had been flattened by the wind.
Two St. Landry high schools were damaged. One of them was destroyed. Brick walls were knocked down and the roof was severely damaged.
