In a bold, early morning attack, the 2nd Brigade of the US 3rd Infantry Division with air support from A-10 Warthogs and pilotless drones, drove a column of 65 tanks and 40 Bradley fighting vehicles into Baghdad and across the Tigris River. They had to clear a minefield in the road before taking the Presidential palaces along the river. They captured both the Presidential Palace and the New Presidential Palace. About 600 to 1,000 Iraqis were killed. The Palace near the Baghdad Airport is also in US hands.
The capture of the Presidential Palaces was a climax to one of the greatest military advances of history. The US forces also briefly surrounded the nearby Information Ministry as well as the Al-Rashid Hotel. However, they left these buildings and pulled back to spend the night at the New Presidential Palace garden. The British also swept through Saddam's Southern Palace in Basra.
