The 22-year old, 3-decker ferry hit the pier about 3:20 PM EDT (1920 GMT). Winds of 31 mph gusting to 43 mph may have contributed to the crash. The ferry was one of 5 that operate between Staten Island and lower Manhattan. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who was at the New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game, left Yankee Stadium to go to the scene.

An armored van, the third vehicle in the convoy, was ripped in two by a remote controlled roadside bomb attached by wire to an ON/OFF switch in a nearby building. The blast about 10:15 AM (0815 GMT) killed 3 US security guards from DynCorp, a Virginia-based security firm. They were: John Branchizio, 36; Mark T. Parson, 31; and John Martin Linde Jr., 30. Astronaut Yang Liwei, 38, a Lieutenant colonel of the People's Liberation Army, was launched into earth orbit on a Long March CZ-2 F rocket aboard the spacecraft, Shenzhou V, yesterday.
