Five villages were devastated, and about 300 are believed dead and 400 injured. The train of 51 cars without a conductor rolled out of the Abu Muslim train station, outside Neyshabur, at 4 AM. At the next stop at Khayyam, about 12 miles away, 48 of the cars derailed and caught fire. Firefighters managed to extinguish 90 percent of the fire when the cars exploded at 9:37 AM. The dead included top city officials, including Neyshabur's governor, mayor, and fire chief as well as the head of the energy department and the director-general of the provincial railways, who had all gone to the derailment. Many spectators who were there were also killed.
The train's cargo included 17 cars loaded with sulfur, six with gasoline, seven with fertilizer, and 10 with cotton. The explosion destroyed the local mud homes. The hardest hit area was Hashemabad, and many of the homes in Dehnow were leveled. The blast shattered windows six miles away.
The disaster came two days before elections in which the reformist candidates have been disqualified by the Muslim hardliners. The election is scheduled for February 20th, Day 51, for arrogance. There were 51 cars in the runaway train, which was without a conductor. And the heads of government agencies in Neyshabur were killed by the explosion. A train without a conductor, like a horse without a rider, symbolizes a fallen leader. Not only is Neyshabur without leadership, but so is all of Iran. Forty-eight cars derailed in Neyshabur, where 48 stand for the inheritance of the Levites, which is an icon of the Promised Land. Iran is extremely anti-Semitic.
